“Rollin'” by the Bay City Rollers

FAVORITE SELECTION: “Saturday Night”

ABOUT THIS ALBUM: The Bay City Rollers were originally known as the Saxons. Desiring a better name for the band, they settled on “Rollers”, but needed a more powerful American-sounding term in front of that. Derek Longmuir threw a dart at a map of the United States, landing first on Arkansas. This did not meet anyone’s approval, so a second dart was thrown. It landed near Bay City, Michigan. The band agreed on the name, the Bay City Rollers.

Rollin’, released in 1974, was the first full-length album by Scotland’s Bay City Rollers. The album included three British chart hits (“Remember”, “Shang-a-Lang”, “Summerlove Sensation”) and the debut of “Saturday Night”, never a British hit yet a No. 1 smash in America, later.

While the album itself was not issued in America, several of the songs would later appear on the band’s self-titled 1975 U.S. debut.

WHY I CHOSE THIS ALBUM: I first heard the album song, “Saturday Night” at the Rainbow Gardens Roller Rink, where I spent a lot of time as a teen. This was the traditional closing song for the night, offered as a men’s only skate. I have many good memories of those roller skating days.
