SHIP DETAILS: The Palmer was built by the Detroit Dry Dock Company at Wyandotte, Michigan in 1889, with 2,134 gross tons and 1,622 net tons capacity.

CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE LOSS: The SS Harvard collided with the Palmer in dense fog. The collision nearly cut the Palmer in two, and she sank within five minutes. There was no loss of life, as the crew of 19 was able to board the Harvard before the Palmer went down. Although badly damaged, the Harvard was able to make port safely.
